Time became a blurring collage of balding trees, whipping wind, countless rehearsals, auditioning of staff and insane cravings. Indigo had managed to avoid Max by delving all the way into planning her studio’s open house. After the performance of the Nutcracker would be a decadent reception that would give the community a chance to speak with her and the other instructors that would be teaching there.

Her days were filled with meticulously rehearsing in preparation for the show. Even though they were only middle school and high school aged children, they followed instructions well and they were coordinated. The performance was going to be as professional as possible for a bunch of children who didn’t even get to take dance more than twice a week.

Indigo had to scour the city to find the best dance teachers to teach at the studio, so the audition schedule was crazy. Not to mention, she broke down and asked her parents to donate money for the reception, which they delightfully agreed to. She refused to ask Max for any more money given the state of their relationship. Him getting the place built and offering to pay the staff salary for the next five years was enough. And after she ignored his phone calls for a few weeks, he finally gave up contacting her. But she knew that she would have to see him sooner than later, she just had to cultivate the nerve.

But despite her overwhelming schedule, she still wanted him. She longed to see him again but suppressed her desires. Avoiding going to the studio at certain times had become one of her many skills. Fighting the urge to pick up the phone and dial him, she would instead eat, which had caused her to gain a few pounds.

Figuring it was stress from the show, she continued to down odd foods. She had cravings for burgers and got extra pickles each time she would order one.

I have to slow down, she thought as she placed a burger from the Shake Shack in her mouth.

While mid-chew, she received a phone call from Braden, the lead contractor.

“Hello,” she answered the phone, mouth muffled from the hunk beef shoved in her cheeks.

“Good afternoon, Ms. Breaux. I wanted to know if you had to time to stop by today. We’re going to be installing light fixtures this week but I never had a chance to ask you what were your preferences.”

“You want me to meet you at the studio?”

“Yes. There’s actually a lighting store right around the corner, so I can buy them today. I also wanted you to walk around and get a feel for the place. I just want to confirm that we are on the right path with the construction.”

“I’ll be there soon. I can’t wait to see what you’ve done to the place!” she exclaimed as she finished off the burger.

“I’ll see you soon, Ms. Breaux.”

Scarfing down a cup of iced tea, she gathered her dance bag and made her way to the dance studio.
